BNP Paribas Fortis Legal has a vacancy for a lawyer in its Legal Financing department. This department provides legal support to our Retail Networks, Corporate Coverage & Specialised Finance (CC&SF) and Factoring. The vacancy is in the CC&SF team. The team provides legal support to various lines of business in the area of granting loans and collateral and, more specifically, to the Corporate Coverage business (incl. “Public Institutions”, “Financial Institutions”, “Real Estate Finance”, “Ports Practice”) and Trade Finance (issuance of guarantees and documentary credits) and syndicated credits. For these lines of business, the team structures and supports the legal aspects of lending and the issuance of bank guarantees and documentary credits, and assists in defining the general legal policy and guidelines in these areas.
Your job
- The position offers a unique mix of transactional and advisory work in a highly dynamic environment.
- For transactional work, you will be involved at all stages of processing credit files. Over the term of the loans, you will advise the business line and operational services involved on all legal aspects (e.g. in the event of modifications to the documentation, requiring collateral, refinancing, etc.). You will also assist and advise the services involved in restructuring and bankruptcies (in both a domestic and an international context).
- As part of the team, you will also advise Global Trade Solutions and Bank Guarantees. This involves preparing and checking bank guarantee texts, preparing and checking process notes, following up on disputes, e.g. in the event of appeals for bank guarantees, following up on projects and providing advice to the Trade Finance Group Competence Centre, etc.
- In addition, you will be responsible for evaluating the bank's legal and reputational risks and for drawing up and enforcing the relevant legal guidelines and documentation required for the bank's financing activities.
- You will be interact with a number of business lines on a daily basis.
- You will also be a member of the Legal Financing Platform, an organisation that brings together all Legal finance professionals within the BNP Paribas Group and which is further subdivided according to specialisations.
Highlight your strengths
- You are capable of handling topics independently, but you are also a team player who shares knowledge and collaborates with colleagues within Legal Belgium and Legal Group.
- You have a Master’s degree in law from a Belgian university (an additional qualification or specialisation in banking and financial law is a plus) and you preferably already have relevant experience working in the banking sector or at a law firm.
- You have strong legal analytical skills, you communicate well, have negotiating skills, are persuasive and can approach topics in a way that is pragmatic but legally correct.
- You use common sense and can empathise with the needs of internal customers.
- You are quick to spot legal risks, are flexible and react rapidly.
- You have very good knowledge of English and Dutch or French, both actively and passively. If you are not fluent in one of the two national languages, you need to have good passive knowledge at the minimum.
