Manager at BNP Paribas Consulting & Transformation

Wilson Coteiro was one of the first people to join BNP Paribas Consulting & Transformation when it was created in 2014. Now he serves as the manager of this team, taking on challenges and innovations in a constantly bustling environment. Let’s dive into the heart of consulting at BNP Paribas.

You are an internal consultant in the Group. What sets you apart from an external consultant?

We work on assignments that are similar to those that were traditionally given to management consultancies, with the exception that we work exclusively within the BNP Paribas Group. We support the Business Lines and Functions with issues like operational efficiency, digitization and defining target operating models or strategic development plans. Internal consultants are distinguished primarily by their shared corporate culture and thorough knowledge of the BNP Paribas organization. These are strong advantages that allow them to learn topics rapidly and work more efficiently from day to day. Our promise perfectly encapsulates our ongoing quest for efficiency and excellence: “internal knowledge combined with external demands”.

Do you have a busy schedule?

Yes, but it is all very exciting! Every assignment is a new challenge because we are working with different internal clients on a wide range of issues. We work in an extremely dynamic environment and under tight deadlines. But the techniques and methodologies we develop ensure we have the work environment we need to reach our goals. Furthermore, we never know what type of assignment we will be working on next—it’s a hint of mystery that I find exhilarating.

Every assignment is a new challenge because we are working with different internal clients on a wide range of issues.

Do you have a standard assignment?

The distinguishing feature of internal consulting is the constant change of environment, topic, client and team. Every assignment is the start of a new adventure. By the same token, we have no standard day, either. One day you might lead a workshop, the next you might present an advance to the management team, and the next jet off to Milan to test proposed solutions. It’s hard to find another line of work that offers such a vast range of assignments.

Do you have a story that sums up your business?

We have a lot of stories—but I’ll keep them to myself! We have a rule within the function that no one can break: “What happens on assignment, stays on assignment.” If you want to know more, you’ll have to apply to work with us at BNP Paribas Consulting. We’re currently looking for consultants and managers.

Have you ever met anyone remarkable in the course of your job?

Mentioning any single person would be too reductive. I’ll simply tell you that internal consulting is a powerful accelerator if you want to expand your network. In my case, I’ve never met so many people as I have doing this job.

What is the key skill that every consultant should master?

to succeed in this business, you have to cultivate your curiosity every day and demonstrate an ability to adapt to any challenge
Outside-the-box thinking. That’s how we manage to propose innovative solutions. But other skills are just as important, such as empathy, listening and diplomacy. These are key qualities for working efficiently with a team and with clients.

Finally, to succeed in this business, you have to cultivate your curiosity every day and demonstrate an ability to adapt to any challenge.
