Meet Daniel Shamir, Head of Securities Services Tax and Regulatory, BNP Paribas Securities Services, France
What’s the biggest challenge you face in your job on a daily basis?
Daniel: Sometimes it feels like trying to interpret hieroglyphs. I spend my time trying to translate complex tax policies into something that can be understood even by a 10-year-old. You remember the telephone game where you say something to your neighbor and that message gets passed down the line through ten people? There’s always a great feeling when you get to the end of the chain and the message is still relevant. That means I was clear and precise in what I was communicating.
What are the 3 superpowers needed in your job?
Daniel: First : Good analytical skills: understanding how different things work together in order to apply a certain text or regulation to your current situation. Second : Ability to synthesize complex information and distill it into easy-to-understand information. Third : Rigor & persistence, having the motivation to keep digging even when you hit a wall
What do you wish people knew about your job and the Bank?
Daniel: My work in the Compliance teams involves ensuring that we’re responsible within the communities we serve, and ultimately we could say that it helps to guarantee the safety & security of our financial system.
