This opera-ballet by Torrejon y Velasco, with a libretto by the celebrated Spanish poet Pedro Calderon de la Barca, was presented to the public by conductor Gabriel Garido in late 1999 at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva and the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid. This baroque work was created in Lima in 1701 to celebrate the power of the Spanish empire and the accession of the Bourbons to the throne.

The fruit of close collaboration between the Fondation BNP Paribas, a longstanding partner of the "Chemins du Baroque" program, and BNP Paribas Suisse - which provided support for the production - the work is being performed on March 20, 2001 in Mexico City as part of the Historic Center Festival. The event provides an superb opportunity for continued support for this astonishing opera, featuring Venus, Mars and Adonis in starring roles.
