The 18th Annual Young Writer's Award: young writers receive their prizes in Muret

  • 10.06.2002
On 31 May last the small town of Muret in Haute-Garonne hosted the prize-giving ceremony for the Young Writer's Award and the Young Francophone Writer's Award, an event organised with the support of the Fondation BNP Paribas. The Young Writer's Award, which was instituted in 1985, is conferred annually for an unpublished work of prose of between five and forty pages from a young author aged between fifteen and twenty-five years. In 1998 the organisers decided to add a Young Francophone Writer's Award (for works by French speakers from outside France).

Going from strength to strength
This year 1,234 manuscripts from 59 different countries (of which 689 from France and 545 from abroad) were submitted by writers with their eyes set on Muret. Thanks to the support provided by the Fondation BNP Paribas, the Agence Intergouvernementale de la Francophonie and Radio France Internationale, public interest in the Young Writer's and Young Francophone Writer's Awards is growing yearly and extends over the five continents.
Hence the importance of the 247 committees set up all over France to read the works and select a number of them for submission to a jury made up of writers and literary critics. This jury, which was chaired by the 1978 winner of the Prix Goncourt for Short Story Writing, Christiane Baroche, then short-listed fourteen finalists.

The 2002 prize-winners
The award ceremony, which is above all a celebration of youth, singled out seven French and seven foreign writers. The Young Writer's Award went to Séverine Beau, aged 22 from Versailles, for "Cargo" and the Young Francophone Writer's Award to Yasmina Traboulsi, a 27-year-old Brazilian, for "Les Gens de la Place".

Speaking after the ceremony, Marc Sebbah, Founder-President of the Association, and Christiane Baroche, said that they hoped to continue to open up and widen the scope of the award so that it becomes a symbol of all that is enjoyable in literature and as free as possible from the constraints of conformity.

The winning short stories will appear in October 2002 in a collection published by Le Mercure de France.
