    The economic and financial crisis has entered a new and more dangerous phase. Initially limited to the peripheral countries, which are relatively small in terms of eurozone GDP, tensions have spread since last summer to bigger economies such as Italy and Spain. Italy deserves special attention given the size of its economy (the third largest in the region and a G7 member) and its huge stock of debt.
