With a 21% market share, BNP Paribas leads the sector of banks lending to major French corporates. Since the beginning of the year, the bank has handled 70 deals totaling $27.3 million, putting it ahead of Calyon ($12.2 million) and Société Générale ($11.8 million).
This ranking could largely be ascribed to the Bank's role in arranging the financing for Sanofi's acquisition of Aventis. BNP Paribas has also benefited from a favorable operating environment: In the first nine months of the year, the bank lending market grew by 85%.
In this sector, France is the leading country in Europe and #2 worldwide.
