Senior MSSQL/Sybase Database Administrator - VP

The position at a glance

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Database Administrator to provide expert-level support, administration, and architectural guidance for our core database estate, specifically focusing on Sybase (ASE/IQ) with Replication Server, Microsoft SQL Server with Always on, and MongoDB replica sets. The successful candidate will manage a hybrid environment of legacy relational systems and modern distributed NoSQL databases within a Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) Infrastructure setting, ensuring high availability, security, and seamless data synchronization across the enterprise.

In detail

Operations & Incident Management

• Provide 24/7/365 L3/L4 support for mission-critical Sybase, MSSQL, and MongoDB environments.
• Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours/weekend support (including hotline coverage 7:30 AM–6:30 PM, Mon–Fri).
• Triage and resolve complex critical incidents (e.g., Sybase Replication latency/errors, MSSQL Always On failures, MongoDB replica set elections, or node outages).
• Automate remediation for common failures (e.g., automated reconciliation of replication queues).

Lifecycle Management & Migration

• Install, configure, patch, and upgrade Sybase, MSSQL, and MongoDB instances in accordance with security baselines.
• Manage and maintain Sybase Replication Server environments to support data distribution and integration.
• Execute zero-downtime migrations for End-of-Life (EOL) systems (e.g., migrating legacy Sybase workloads to MSSQL, upgrading EOL SQL Server versions, or migrating legacy MongoDB versions to current stable releases).
• Plan and execute schema migrations, data modeling changes, and index optimizations specific to both RDBMS and NoSQL architectures.

High Availability, Replication & Disaster Recovery

• Administer and optimize high-availability and data synchronization configurations:

• Sybase: Replication Server (RSS), managing topologies, agent configurations, and resolving replication bottlenecks/latency.
• MSSQL: Always On Availability Groups, Failover Cluster Instances (FCI).
• MongoDB: Replica Sets and Sharded Clusters.

• Manage Backup & Recovery: Ensure Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR), snapshots, and cross-region Disaster Recovery (DR) for all three platforms.
• Conduct regular DR compliance testing, including RPO/RTO validation and failover drills.

Performance Engineering & Monitoring

• Monitor and tune database performance (e.g., MSSQL execution plans, Sybase query optimization, and MongoDB query profiling/compaction).
• Diagnose and resolve Sybase Replication issues, including latency, throughput bottlenecks, and data discrepancies between source and target.
• Automate performance baseline using tools such as Grafana, or native tools (e.g., SQL Server Profiler/Extended Events).

Security & Compliance

• Enforce strict database security baselines (e.g., Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), network encryption, and audit logging).
• Remediate vulnerabilities (CVE patches) and ensure compliance and internal audit policies.
• Collaborate with Cybersecurity to harden databases against injection attacks and unauthorized replication/access.

Architecture & Strategy

• Design and deploy scalable, fault-tolerant architectures (e.g., sharded MongoDB clusters or highly available MSSQL environments).
• Develop standardized runbooks, provisioning procedures, and naming conventions.
• Identify operational risks (e.g., single points of failure or replication lag) and mitigate them through redundancy and automation.Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, or a related field

•  Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
• 10+ years of experience building and operating the following:

• Relational Databases: Expert-level proficiency in Sybase (ASE/IQ) and Microsoft SQL Server.
• Replication Technology: Hands-on experience managing Sybase Replication Server (configuring topologies, troubleshooting queues, and managing agents).
• NoSQL Databases: Proven experience with MongoDB (including sharding and replica sets).

• Deep understanding of High Availability (MSSQL Always On, MongoDB Replica Sets).
• Advanced performance tuning (indexing, storage engine configuration, query optimization).
• Security hardening (TDE, RBAC, encryption).
• Automation & Scripting: Proficiency in PowerShell, Python, Bash, Ansible, or Terraform to automate database and replication tasks.
• Industry Knowledge: Proven experience working within CIB (Corporate and Investment Banking) Infrastructure.
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving aptitude.
• Ability to work effectively in a global, fast-moving team environment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Self-starter with meticulous attention to detail.
• Availability: Willingness to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation.
