Position Purpose

The RISK Officer position is available within the APAC Counterparty Team, based in Hong Kong. The counterparty team belongs to CCR team within RISK Markets & Financial Institution (RISK MFI), which is part of the RISK Function within BNP Paribas.

The mission of RISK Market & Financial Institutions (“RISK MFI”) is to provide Senior Management of the Group, of the RISK Function, of the Business lines (Global Markets and Securities Services) and of the Coverage with full transparency and dynamic analysis and recommendations with respect to the market, liquidity, counterparty, credit, and valuation risks, in order to assist them in their risk decision making. As part of RISK Markets & Financial Institutions, APAC Counterparty Analysis team is a transversal team supporting the credit decision process and managing the counterparty risk generated by any corporate, financial institution (incl. market infrastructure), and sovereign counterparty, as well as collateral risk in APAC, as per the scope detailed below.    

Scope

•    Counterparty risks across all Global Markets activities: Prime Brokerage, Listed Derivatives, OTC Cleared, Bilateral OTC, Repo and Security Lending and Borrowing Activities including flow requests and exposure analysis in APAC,

•    Portfolio analysis for all the counterparties (including Banks, Insurers, Hedge Funds, CCP, Corporates) under the coverage of Global Markets APAC,

•    Development and Implementation of stress test frameworks and key risk indicators to quantity and manage market, concentration and liquidity risk within client portfolios in APAC,

•    Analysis of Margin/Haircut methodology and collateral management within Credit Support Annex (CSA), Repo, Security Lending and Borrowing, Clearing and Prime Brokerage (PB) agreements to ensure optimal risk mitigation.

The candidate will be in direct and regular contact with front office (Trader, sales and management), participating in various meetings and managing the relationship with the first line on a day-to-day basis. It will be necessary to also work closely with other RISK teams, especially credit officers and market risk officers in APAC. 

Responsibilities

APAC Counterparty Risk Team works closely with both the Hedge Fund Team on the risk management of Hedge Funds (HFs) and Higher Risk Funds (HRFs) and Credit Team on other financial institutions and Corporates.

Main responsibilities from a counterparty risk angle

•    Analyze and monitor counterparty risk exposures on selected names or portfolios in APAC: 

o    Understand the origin of the exposures (specific trades, products),

o    Design, in close coordination and in agreement with Market & Liquidity Risk Team, Credit Team, and HF Team, the relevant risk measurement methods and stress testing, under both internal and regulatory context,

o    Aggregate and monitor, in coordination with Market & Liquidity Risk Team, across products and Business Units the market risk sensitivities by counterparty, hence providing a transversal view,

o    Support the Credit Team and HF Team, as well as RISK Corporate, by providing relevant analysis and organizing dedicated forums,

o    Define and maintain complex overrides, on the global scope of counterparties, for exotic products,

o    Review and analyze, from counterparty risk point of view, all complex transactions. 

•    Analyze and define risk appetite and monitor the aggregation of counterparty risk cross products and counterparty types in close collaboration and in agreement with the Credit Team and Hedge Fund Team. Co-define stress test framework for HFs with the Hedge Fund Team.

o    analyze, define, and monitor the counterparty risk appetite for different products, asset classes and underlying across all counterparties,

o    analyze, define, and monitor the counterparty risk appetite for different platforms (GBLs, Clearing, PB) or Counterparty types (Corporates, Banks, Funds, Hedge Funds, Brokers, Financial Sponsors…),

o    Define the adequate risk framework ex-ante on transactions (before trading),

o    Define the adequate risk framework to reflect the risk appetite on different aggregation levels,

o    Organize and lead/co-lead cross products or cross counterparties forums: Regional CCR and Financial Institutions Main Position, Corporate Main Position, PB Risk meetings. 

•    Act as the central point of contact within RISK for collateral topics in APAC: 

o    Define and maintain eligible collateral policies and organize collateral processes.

o    Issue recommendation for non-standard collateral exceptional requests,

o    Define and monitor the collateral portfolio and concentration envelopes,

o    In close collaboration with the HF Team, Credit Team, CIB Functions, lead the organization of regular forums for reviewing collateral.

•    Contribute to the specific risk framework for Prime Brokerage activities. 

•    Analyze and monitor Economic and Regulatory Measures – including Stress Testing – linked to Counterparty Credit Risk on APAC counterparties.

•    For financial risks related to Market & Financing Services - Derivative Execution & Clearing for Financial Listed Derivatives, APAC Counterparty Risk Team’s main responsibilities are: 

o    Perform collateral monitoring and portfolio analysis across all Securities Services’ activities in APAC,

o    Provide counterparty risk analysis at the request of RISK Credit officers,

o    Ensure/contribute to risk reviews, portfolio analyses notably when quantitative expertise is required,

o    Organize and / or participate and / or contribute to the relevant risk forum. 

Contributions

•    Propose methodology and systems enhancements for counterparty risk monitoring.

•    Contribute to the review and approval of all valuation and official risk management models and counterparty risk methodologies.

•    Answer to requests from auditors or regulators for Counterparty or Market Risk related topics, in coordination with relevant stakeholders.

Technical & Behavioral Competencies

•    Bachelor’s or master’s degree in finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.

•    3-5 years of experience in market risk, counterparty risk or credit risk management.

•    Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) to: 

o    Further build the business / RISK relationship,

o    Synthetize clearly key messages through risk analysis.

•    Be proactive and take ownership of the tasks and be accountable for the contributions.  

•    Strong analytical skills to independently solve various problems arising on our day-to-day, using curiosity and creativity. 

•    Be capable of recognizing deficiencies in various risk measures and propose methods to enhance risk control and streamline the risk process.

•    The candidate will need to have and develop a solid quantitative background. 

•    Knowledge of derivatives, ideally across multiple asset classes.

•    Ability to react quickly but precisely in high pressure trading situations with Front Office interactions.

•    Computational skills required (VBA or R/Python). 

•    Proficiency in leveraging Generative AI tools, with a demonstrated ability to architect multi-step workflows and design agentic frameworks to automate complex analytical and reasoning tasks.
