BNP Paribas: a major player regarding innovation and mobile payments in Europe

Published On 20.11.2013
Innovation has payed the way for a revolution in the area of mobile payments in Europe: a revolution in terms of use, technologies, and players. Based on its European presence and the strength of its domestic network, BNP Paribas has tapped this multidimensional revolution to continue better serving and anticipating the needs of its customers.

BNP Paribas is developing a global and consistent strategy based on the needs of consumers and retailers. At the core of its value-oriented proposal is the digital wallet. For peer-to-peer payments, contactless payments, or mobile purchases, the offer's spectrum can cover all user-specific needs.

“BNP Paribas is the only European bank to have launched all of these innovative initiatives in different domestic markets. Our approach seeks to make the consumers' purchasing experience, and not just payments, easier and more secure. And we want to do that in partnership with retailers,” stresses François Villeroy de Galhau, Chief Operating Officer at BNP Paribas and responsible for domestic markets.

“We wanted to expand our value proposition by focusing our product on our customers' needs. These products are currently available in France, Italy, and Belgium, and are reaching more and more consumers,” explains Béatrice Cossa Dumurgier, COO of Retail Banking at BNP Paribas.

Now, after launching Hello bank! (its digital bank) last May, BNP Paribas is currently developing several innovative solutions in Europe:

Paylib in France: the first multi-bank wallet for individuals

BNP Paribas, La Banque Postale and Société Générale launched Paylib as a new simple and secure payment for online or mobile use. It represents a response to customers' needs for simplicity and security, while offering a new way to pay online via a computer, smartphone, or tablet, without having to enter their banking or credit card information.

Sixdots in Belgium: the first digital wallet incorporating all of a retailer's services

This mobile and digital wallet contains the customer's payment tools (primarily their bank card information). It enables customers to make payments online in a simple and secure manner (by providing their login+password rather than their card information) and it offers a variety of additional customer-oriented services, such as discount coupons, electronic storing of their tickets, and so on, without ever leaving the retailer's site.

Mobo in France, Belgium and Italy: a mobile solution for professionals without a payment terminal

The Mobile Acquiring product and service enables independent mobile professionals and small-scale retailers to accept payments via bank cards, thanks to a small card reader connected to their smartphones. This solution is very easy to use and has a clear pricing scale.

Easy Transfer in Belgium

With smartphones, it is now possible to make peer-to-peer payments among individuals. The application offers an alternative to cash payments. Accordingly, the payment of small amounts among colleagues or at a restaurant among friends is quick and easy to do. With this simple product, making a payment transaction among individuals is within phone's reach.

YouPass in Italy: the best contactless payment form

Contactless payment enables one to pay for purchases by means of a mobile phone or a smart bank card via a mobile phone (thanks to the chip inside the phone and the SIM card which holds a secure banking app) or a bank card. All the cardholder has to do is approach the no-contact terminal to make the payment. Given the speed of the transaction, retailers like having this capability at high-traffic sales points. This type of payment is made possible thanks to near-field communication (NFC) technology.

Natural Security in France: the first biometry-based authentication system

Payment directly authenticated by biometry is a technology that combines security and simplicity. Our partner Natural Security developed this powerful authentication tool, which ensures that only authorized individuals can make a payment. We are currently testing it for our customers. Biometric checks may be performed by means of facial or voice recognition, or by scanning fingerprints.
