Financing the Blue Economy Through Private Placements
Private placements are a key financial tool that unites investors to finance companies and projects, primarily through bond issuances. More specifically, a “blue” bond is designed to support a specific environmental mandate: to support water preservation and management initiatives that meet rigorous sustainability criteria, including preserving water resources, protecting marine and coastal ecosystems, and reducing pollution.
In 2025, BNP Paribas successfully executed three landmark “blue” private placements, totalling 75 million euros. This achievement marks a significant advancement in the evolution of the Group’s Green Bond Framework, which has been expanded to fully incorporate the blue economy as a core pillar of sustainable finance. The enhanced framework facilitates the identification and financing of transformative projects across essential sectors, such as sustainable water management, innovative water treatment technologies, marine and coastal conservation, clean mobility development, and the decarbonisation of maritime transport.
the scale of blue private placements mobilised by BNP Paribas in 2025, including structured products. These initiatives are designed to direct capital towards projects and businesses tackling critical water and Ocean-related challenges.
These actions not only enable the much-needed financing of companies and leaders innovating to accelerate the ecological transition, but they also meet the needs of investors eager to allocate capital towards initiatives that have a real positive impact, thereby aligning financial performance with environmental responsibility.
Solutions That Combine Investment and Environmental Impact
This mobilisation of capital markets reached a significant milestone in July 2025 when BNP Paribas Banque Privée launched the first blue bond designed specifically for a private banking clientele. Structured by the BNP Paribas Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB) teams, this innovative product was created to finance projects dedicated to the conservation and restoration of coastal and marine areas, as well as initiatives focused on sustainable water management and treatment.
Blue bonds incentivise greater environmental impact by incorporating two complementary elements: The first is a thematic index centered on water and Ocean sustainability developed in partnership with MSCI, which ensures that investments align with stringent environmental criteria. The second is a philanthropic component, whereby 0.2% of subscribed amounts can be allocated—via the Dift platform—to organisations dedicated to the preservation of aquatic environments.
With €75 million raised in just a few weeks, this blue bond had exceeded initial expectations and demonstrated strong investor interest in the field.… A success that was renewed in 2026, as the new campaign once again raised nearly €75 million in a matter of weeks. Nearly €150,000 were thus allocated to three associations working to preserve the Ocean:
The Tara Ocean Foundation, to help fund the expeditions of Tara Polar Station
Blue Alliance, to support the management of the Maluku marine protected area in Indonesia
Les P’tits Doudous, to contribute to the financing of the first IMOCA boat made from recycled materials.
