The Role
We are seeking an experienced Building Surveyor to lead and grow our building consultancy service across a diverse portfolio of rural estates in Scotland. This is a senior role for a surveyor who combines technical excellence with the ability to build trusted relationships and deliver high-quality projects in heritage, agricultural, residential and commercial settings.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Strategy
• Build, develop and lead a high performing team, shaping a growing service line and mentoring junior colleagues.
• Work collaboratively with all colleagues across the rural consultancy business, including rural surveyors, natural capital, farming and forestry consultants.
• Provide strategic advice to estate owners and managers on building performance, risk, energy efficiency, sustainability and capital investment.
Technical Delivery
• Lead building maintenance programmes across multiple managed estates, ensuring proactive planning, accurate budgeting, compliance and long-term asset resilience.
• Deliver stand-alone building projects from inception to completion, including condition surveys, feasibility studies, procurement, contract administration and project management.
• Ensure professional standards across all surveying outputs, including reporting, specifications, tender documentation and contractor oversight.
• Assess quotations obtained for quality and value.
• Obtain statutory consents including, planning, Listed Building and Building Regulations.
• Advise on building cost apportionments between revenue and capital for taxation purposes.
• Undertake insurance reinstatement cost assessments.
Compliance and Safety
• Champion a culture of safety excellence by ensuring the highest standards of Health and Safety are maintained across all activities, leading by example to ensure the well-being of colleagues, contractors and clients at all times.
• Instruct, manage and supervise contractors ensuring compliance with CDM regulations for both notifiable and non-notifiable projects.
Person Specification
• Competent and experienced MRICS or MCIOB qualified surveyor with a minimum of 3 years post qualification experience, ideally within rural, heritage or multi-asset environments.
• Confident managing projects end-to end, with clear communication and good stakeholder management.
• Motivated to build a team, shape a service line and contribute to the business’ long-term growth.
• Practiced at building and maintaining good relationships with colleagues, clients and other stakeholders such as tenants.
• Possessing a composed manner and able to work under pressure.
• Good time management and ability to prioritise workloads.
• High levels of accuracy and attention to detail.
Experience:
• Building Surveyor - MRICS or MCIOB, with a relevant degree or qualifications and minimum of 3 years post qualification experience.
• Proficient in the use of Auto CAD or similar, Word, Excel & PowerPoint.
