BNP Paribas launches a new Corporate Philanthropy programme in support of climate change research

Published On 01.06.2011
As part of BNP Paribas' overall commitment to combating climate change, the BNP Paribas Foundation has stepped up its work in the environmental field by launching a new programme intended to support research into climate change, its main factors and the consequences it could have for our environment and our way of life.

Since 2010, the BNP Paribas Foundation has already been supporting the Subglacior project, which traces climate history using an innovative coring method to examine Antarctic ice sheets at the Laboratory of Glaciology and Environmental Geophysics.

This new Foundation programme, running for three years on a budget of €3 million, will support four additional research programmes.

International Scientific Committee
In order to benefit from expert opinions in the selection of projects for support, the BNP Paribas Foundation asked Philippe Gillet, Vice-President of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne, Switzerland, to chair a scientific committee. The committee consisted of a number of eminent figures from the world of climate change research: Joanna Haigh (Imperial College, London), Jean-Pascal van Ypersele (Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics at the Catholic University of Louvain), Thomas Stocker (Institute of Physics at the University of Berne) and Riccardo Valentini (University of Tuscia at Viterbo). Representing various related disciplines – climate dynamics and modelling, geology, paleoclimatology, ocean-atmosphere interaction, forest-climate interaction, etc. – these experts were able to examine in detail each of the projects submitted for funding.

Four innovative research projects to be supported over three years:
Chosen from around 50 applications for funding, the following four research programmes will receive support from the BNP Paribas Foundation over the next three years:

- AAA: Digital processing and archiving of the records of meteorological observations so as to make these historical climate data accessible to scientific experts worldwide
Main partners in the project: Météo-France, Archives Nationales

- eFOCE: Use of subsea equipment to increase understanding and enable forecasting of the impact of ocean acidification on marine ecosystems
Main partners in the project: Laboratoire d'Océanographie de Villefranche (France), Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (USA), Station Biologique de Roscoff (France), Plymouth marine Laboratory (Royaume–Uni), Mediterranean Institude for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA)

- PRECLIDE: Development and application of methods of estimating climate change over the next 30 years
Main partners in the project: Sciences de l'Univers au CERFACS, CNRS/CERFACS, Météo-France, Université de Reading (Royaume–Uni), Université de Toronto (Canada)

- Global Carbon Atlas: Creation of an online tool to provide comprehensive information on the flow of greenhouse gases on a global scale
Main partners in the project: Global Carbon Project (GCP)/ Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Organization (CSIRO), University of East Anglia (Royaume Uni), IPSL / CEA CNRS UVSQ (France), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA)

A Corporate Philanthropy programme that is embedded in overall Group Corporate Social Responsibility policy
"Having underlined our commitment to help combat climate change by signing up to the Climate Principles in 2010, we continue working to reduce the environmental impact of all our financing and investment activities, such as offering our clients ‘green' banking products. So it was natural to extend our environmental initiatives to the Corporate Philanthropy work carried out by the BNP Paribas Foundation," explained Laurece Pessez, Head of Group Corporate Social Responsibility at BNP Paribas.
