BNP Paribas hires Simon Piney as new global head of ECM

Howard Jones resigns to pursue academic interests

BNP Paribas is pleased to announce the hire of Simon Piney as Global Head of Equity Capital Markets. In this role, which takes effect from July 2001, he will be based in London and report to Thierry Varène, Global Head of Corporate Finance. He will have two co-heads of ECM: Thierry Olive, who is currently Global Head of Equity-Linked ECM and Jean-Claude Ropiquet, Head of ECM France.

Simon replaces Howard Jones who has resigned to pursue academic interests and for a change of lifestyle. Howard joined Paribas in 1994 and became Global Head of ECM in 1998, a position he retained following the merger of BNP Paribas.

Commenting on the changes, Thierry Varène, Global Head of Corporate Finance, said, "We regret Howard's decision to leave the Group and we wish him well in his new ventures. Howard led BNP Paribas' ECM group through changing times and leaves Simon a strong and highly successful group. We thank him warmly for his outstanding contribution to our Corporate Finance business. We are delighted to welcome Simon back to the Group which he knows well, having himself joined Paribas in 1993, and we look forward again to his taking a leading role in our thriving primary equity business."

Simon, 33, rejoins BNP Paribas from UBS Warburg where he was Executive Director in Equity Capital Markets. Prior to that, he spent 7 years at BNP Paribas, leaving in 2000 at which time he was Global Head of Equity Syndicate. Simon joined BNP Paribas in 1993 from County Natwest where he started his career after having graduated from the LSE.
