BNP Paribas establishes in Mauritania

The BNP Paribas Group has been granted authorization from the Mauritanian authorities to open a full-service bank in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. By the end of the year, BNP Paribas Mauritanie will have a staff of more than twenty based at Nouakchott. It will be able to offer local clients – both corporates and private individuals – its latest range of facilities and lending services, and link them to its network of 80 Trade Centers around the world.

BNP Paribas owns 60% of the new subsidiary. The European Development Finance Institutions of Proparco (Agence Française du Développement group) and Deutsche Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG) are also involved in this project, each with a 20% stake in the capital of BNP Paribas Mauritanie.

Mauritania has exceptional mining resources and strong prospects in the petroleum and gas sector, and has steadily attracted numerous investors in recent years. In addition, the ongoing modernisation of its infrastructure has fostered the emergence of successful local businesses.

This new establishment strengthens the Group's already strong presence in North Africa, as well as being a key asset for its sizeable sub-Saharan network, given Mauritania's pivotal role in North-South trading on the African continent.
