BNP Paribas awarded with the global “Bank Deal of the Year”

BNP Paribas is pleased to announce that it has won the Bank Deal of the Year award for its acquisition of Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL) at the annual Retail Banker International Global Awards dinner in London on the 27 November 2006. The dinner, attended by delegates from banks around the globe, is where the industry's leading players are acknowledged for their achievements over the last 12 months.

According to Diane Sim, Managing Director for VRL KnowledgeBank, the magazine's publishers, “The award recognizes BNP Paribas' swift and decisive action in seizing control of BNL and succeeding where the Italian bank's earlier suitors failed”,

The deal gave BNP Paribas control of Italy's 6th largest bank by deposits and loans, as well as a national network of about 900 number of distribution outlets and 3 million retail banking customers. It has made BNP Paribas one of the largest foreign players in Italy, one of Western Europe's highest growth markets, and has made Italy its second domestic market after France.

The judging was undertaken by an international panel of VRL KnowledgeBank journalists and an external panel of representatives from the major international major consulting companies, along with other independent analysts and consultants specialising in retail financial services.

BNP Paribas will present its development plan for the Italian market to investors and analysts on Friday 1 December in Rome.
