Bank of Nanjing is crossing a significant new threshold in its development with its listing on the Shanghai stock exchange. Bank of Nanjing has issued 630 million shares, representing 34.3% of its increased capital, at the price of 11 RMB. This operation has enabled it to raise RMB 6.93 billion (USD 914 million).
This access to the market will enable Bank of Nanjing to finance its development in a sustainable way, in particular its geographical expansion, after having received the approval of the regulator to open branches outside its original local area earlier this year.
At the end of this operation, BNP Paribas' stake in Bank of Nanjing will go from 19.2% to 12.6%. This will have no effect on the existing partnership between the two banks. BNP Paribas and Bank of Nanjing will continue their cooperation, particularly in the fields of retail banking, consumer credit (through a partnership with Cetelem), and risk and organisation management. As the existing principal shareholders did not take part in the operation, BNP Paribas remains the second shareholder in Bank of Nanjing after Nanjing State-owned Asset Investment & Management Holding (group) Co.
Bank of Nanjing achieved excellent results in 2006, with an increase in all leading indicators. Its net banking income rose by 23% to RMB 1.515 million (USD 190 million) and its pre-tax profit was RMB 771 million (USD 97 million), up by 55% compared to 2005. Its operating ratio was 43.6%, an improvement of 2.4 bp.
