The position at a glance

The Trade Finance Operations’ primary function is to process Trade Finance related transactions of BNP Paribas corporate clients and other BNP Paribas branches in compliance with Federal and International Laws and conventions. Additionally, to provide technical assistance to account officers, corporate clients, and other BNP Paribas employees in dealing with the trade related products offered by BNP Paribas.

In detail

The team members are responsible of the following activities:

  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to staff members to ensure the efficient and accurate processing of tasks and operations.
  • Provide reporting personnel with the appropriate level of management and guidance in order for them to carry out their assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Assign and distribute work while continuously monitoring workflow and timeframes. Primary responsibility for the checking and approving of the team’s processing activities. 
  • Manage different mailboxes and ensure all requests are handled in a timely manner 
  • Perform end-of-day verification tasks and provide update reports 
  • Communicate with internal and external clients to understand their needs and resolve any issues.
  • Responsible for the review, vetting, drafting and processing of Standby Letters of Credit [SBLC] / Guarantee language (including Bid/Performance Bonds and Letters of Indemnity),, and as appropriate, discussion with internal / external counsel and Trade Finance Advisor. 
  • Overseeing and processing of other responsibilities related to letter of credit including the issuance, advising/confirming, amendment, examination of documents, payments, SBLC automatic reductions and (Evergreen) auto-extend,  
  • Where necessary, assist in the processing of workflow to make optimum use of resources, foster team spirit and be cognizant of the need to control overtime.
  • Actively encourage and mentor direct reports to build competence and confidence.
  • Ensures to apply AML, OFAC, Compliance regulations and BNPP’s CSR procedures
  • Ensure the Team's activities are conducted in accordance with approved written procedures and internal controls and also comply with applicable Compliance Regulatory and Legal Regulations.  
  • Be competent in the use and potential of the department's primary processing and peripheral applications.  
  • Perform Ad-Hoc task as directed by management.
  • Ensures that transaction processing is consistent with departmental procedures and is in accordance with established administrative guidelines and is consistent within the overall department objectives.
  • Investigates and resolves any inquiries or transaction anomalies on a timely basis, and or within established timetables, received from customers, banks and/ or any internal sources.
  • Routinely reports any problematic, irregular transactions, administrative and or personnel issues to management deemed to present any potential risk or exposure to the bank.
  • Ensures good team work between the teams and assisting other teams in need by cross-coverage when the other team’s workload increases. 
  • Keep current on Trade Finance Guidelines and Regulatory/Legal requirements by reference to related publications if available, active participation in designated in house or external training, and by on-the-job training. Ensure compliance with same by thorough check of own work.
  • Sdd value to the department by sharing your technical experience and knowledge with others.
  • Utilize the various tools at your disposal to ensure assigned work is processed and completed within approved timeframes.    Ensure management is kept updated on any potential problems relating to meeting deadlines, issues and or concerns.
  • Acknowledge and resolve in a timely manner any inquiries received from internal and external clients. Escalate potential problems or seek clarification as appropriate.
  • Being aware of, and adhere to, all internal / external deadlines, paying particular attention to notifications required by internal clients.

The strengths and skills that will help you succeed 

  • Bachelor’s degree preferably with a Commerce stream
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience  
  • Knowledge of Uniform Customs and Practices for Documentary Credits (UCP 600), URDG 758, and International Standby Practices (ISP98) including Uniform Commercial Code article 5
  • Good knowledge of AML, OFAC Compliance regulations
  • Familiarity with bank accounting systems a plus.
  • Professional working proficiency in English language is required* 
  • Microsoft Office with an emphasis on Word, Powerpoint and Excel.

  • Ability to maintain quality of service in a fast-paced production flow (2-hour turnaround).
  • Negotiating ability (internal and external)

  • Maintain consistency of performance and compliance to operational procedures and management reporting guidelines.
  • Ability to work flexible or extended hours when necessary, that includes weekends and bank holidays
  • Hands on supervisor experience responsible for managing staff performance, workflow productivity and efficiencies


 *Given the vast majority of our clients, both internal and external, are based outside of Quebec and Canada, specific language requirements may apply. Professional working proficiency in English language is required.
