The position at a glance

The Market Risk analyst provides a holistic and transversal view of the structural market risks across Global Markets. They also analyse the market risks created by the various exotic derivatives businesses of BNP Paribas notably by conducting in-depth review of the less common or hidden market, valuation or issuer risks. 

The team can also regularly challenge the monitoring, tooling, and framework in place to monitor such structural and exotic risks. This can involve designing and running stress-testing on the trading book positions. It also involves reviewing specific new products or transactions.

The MLR-ESTR regularly interacts with all other market risk teams (of which the methodologies and validation ones), with representants of Global Markets of which the trading desks and the quantitative research, with the valuation risk teams and with RISK IT.

The role requires agility to onboard oneself onto new topics to support the analysis or monitoring conducted by other team members or stakeholders.

We are looking for a quantitative profile who’s developed an understanding of the financial market products and their market risk dynamics.

In detail

  • Maintain strategic oversight of exotic, structural, and transversal risks across the Global Markets business lines.
  • Risk Analysis and Reporting: Identify, measure, analyze and communicate market risks to senior management.
  • New and Undetected Risks: 
    1. Lead MLR efforts in the detection and anticipation of significant market risks and issuer risks.
    2. Participate to the definition and assessment of the risk management framework for new trades, products and activities.
  • Develop, compute and analyse market stress-test scenarios and contribute to the continuous improvement of the existing stress-testing framework.
  • Contribute to the work performed by the Valuation Model Risk team in understanding and challenging choices made in terms of model assumptions or valuation adjustments methodologies.
  • Contribute to topics led by other RISK teams e.g. on regulatory topics, P&L explanations, and process industrialization.

Responsibilities of the Structural Market Risk Analyst:

  • Articulate the main market risk and formulate risk options to RISK Management.
  • Challenge and opinion on the information and views provided by the trading desks.
  • Understand the valuation, market risks and profit & loss of the product or portfolio under analysis.
  • Analyse the risks with the tools available and drive the improvements of those tools.
  • Review and aprove transactions that are outside the usual mandate of the trading desks.
  • Develop and adapt Stress Tests to the trading desks positioning and their market environment.

Work conditions: This position provides for standard working conditions in an office and a normal work schedule from Monday to Friday. 

The strengths and skills that will help you succeed

  • Master’s degree in finance, Applied Mathematics, Science or Engineering. 
  • Up to 5 years of working experience in market risk or counterparty risk with an applied knowledge in derivatives and their risk management.
  • English is required. * 
  • Excellent analytical capabilities.
  • On programming skills, a working knowledge of Python is beneficial.
  • Ability to synthesize information from diverse sources.
  • Motivation to collaborate and share ideas and knowledge with team members.
  • Understands clients’ needs and values constructive and positive feedback.
  • Ability to ensure the precision, accuracy and thoroughness of the information manipulated or delivered.
  • Ability to manage time, to plan, structure, prioritize and coordinate activities and resources effectively to reach objectives.
  • Active in suggesting ideas and improvements and demonstrating curiosity.
  • Given the vast majority of our clients, both internal and external, are based outside of Quebec and Canada, specific language requirements may apply. Professional working proficiency in English language is required. *
