Position
The position is a Market Risk Analyst role in Market, Liquidity and Counterparty Risk team in Japan, within RISK Market & Financial Institutions (“RISK MFI”), primarily covering market risk analysis and coverage of Global Markets trading activities in Japan, and support for counterparty risk analysis and assessment.
RISK MFI provides the senior management of the group, of the RISK function and of Corporate & Institutional Banking (“CIB”) with full transparency and dynamic analysis and monitoring of market, liquidity and counterparty risks originated and managed by CIB Global Markets (“GM”) and credit risks on financial institutions to assist them in their risk decision making and monitoring.
Market, Liquidity and Counterparty Risk team in Japan is part of RISK MFI and RISK MFI Analysis & Decision Market & Liquidity Risk (“MLR”). As a key member of the team, the analyst will be responsible for the monitoring and analysis of market and liquidity risk profile for GM trading activities in Japan, while providing critical support for counterparty credit risk assessments involving Japanese counterparties. He/she will formulate expert risk opinions, drive the enhancement of risk management processes, and support transaction approvals from both market and counterparty risk perspectives. Furthermore, the analyst will actively participate in regional and global risk forums, and collaborate closely with diverse internal stakeholders, including Market, Liquidity and Counterparty Risk teams in other territories, Model and Valuation Risk teams, Risk System teams, Credit Officers, GM trading representatives, etc.
The successful candidate will join RISK MFI MLR APAC, which primarily covers the market, liquidity and counterparty risks of GM business across different locations in APAC. GM activities covered include Local Market Rates, Developed Market Rates, Asia FX Options, Credit & Derivatives and Equities & Derivatives.
Responsibilities
Scope: Market risk analysis and coverage of Global Markets trading activities in Japan, support for counterparty risk analysis and assessment
Key responsibilities of Market, Liquidity and Counterparty Risk team in Japan are:
· Business line leadership: Serve as a center of expertise and the primary point of contact for business lines in Japan, including Rates, Equities and Credit; provide a holistic view of trading activities and associated market risks to all stakeholders; and oversee the application of relevant risk processes.
· Risk anticipation and detection: Anticipate, detect, monitor, and analyze market risks of trading portfolios and transactions; identify and conduct in-depth reviews of hidden risks and potential threats to provide clear views and recommendations for mitigation and decision; and ensure timely escalation to management.
· Risk control framework: Propose and improve market risk control framework, including risk analysis tools, limits and stress testing; and maintain an oversight of valuation and capital metrics.
· Counterparty risk analysis: Analyze and monitor counterparty risk exposure of Japanese counterparties; and conduct portfolio analyses and review transactions to assist credit decision-making.
· Management and regulatory reporting: Ensure accuracy and integrity of data for management and regulatory reporting; prepare risk reports and highlight key risk topics for management as well as regulatory authorities such as FSA and BOJ; and address inquiries from regulatory authorities in a timely and accurate manner.
Key responsibilities of Market Risk Analyst include:
· Contribute to reporting of all risks in scope in a synthetic and comprehensive way to all levels of management, appropriate committees and regulatory authorities.
· Understand the business strategies and rationales, risks, P&L and valuation methodologies of business line activities in the context of current, past and potential market conditions.
· Conduct in-depth analyses, formulate risk opinions and escalate critical findings or issues as appropriate across market and counterparty risk topics.
· Facilitate main position risk meetings and other risk forums, provide independent risk analyses and opinions, and challenge the views from business counterparts with ground.
· Conduct counterparty risk portfolio and transaction analyses.
· Contribute and adapt to the enhancement of risk control framework.
· Involve in the preparation work to address inquiries or requests from regulatory authorities.
· Develop and enhance digital transformation and risk analysis tools.
· Contribute to local governance in Japan and to regulatory topics around RISK MFI.
· Conduct ad-hoc analyses upon request.
Technical & Behavioral Competencies
· Master’s degree or above in Finance, Science, Engineering or other related disciplines.
· Strong quantitative and analytical background with interests in financial markets.
· Knowledge and experience in market or counterparty risk, such as VaR, stress testing, risk measures and financial instruments, is preferred.
· Good written and spoken communication skills, be able to explain technical concepts in practical terms and deal with various business counterparts.
· Self-motivated and independent, with strong sense of accountability under pressure.
· Detail-oriented and organized.
· Proficiency in programming languages, such as Python, is preferred.
· Business-level proficiency in both Japanese and English.
