Key Responsibilities


This role will be within the UK Litigation and Legal Investigations team (Litigation Team) and will involve providing support to the Head of UK Litigation and Legal Investigations and giving litigation and regulatory investigation-related advice in support of the Bank’s activities in the UK.


Global Dispute Resolution is a global team within Group Legal comprising lawyers in various locations who advise in connection with litigation and legal investigations and legal financial security matters, including sanctions, anti-money laundering matters, anti-bribery / corruption, anti-terrorism and anti-boycotting.  GDR advises on all aspects of litigation and regulatory enforcement risks potentially affecting any BNP Paribas Group entity.


Reporting line:  Head of UK Litigation and Legal Investigations


For the purposes of this job description references to ‘ litigation‘ shall include all types of disputes, pre disputes, litigation and investigations (where the Legal Department is involved).  Investigations are likely to be regulatory but will also include non-regulatory as and when required and /or as directed by the Head of UK Litigation or UK General Counsel.


The role will involve all aspects of advice and support to the Litigation Team, whose remit is as follows:


  1. Management of all litigation and legal investigations handled/supported by the Litigation Team.
  2. Providing high quality, effective litigation support in a timely manner to the businesses and territory activities.
  3. Ensuring timely, comprehensive reporting of all litigation in accordance with the required procedures of the Bank and in particular to the UK General Counsel, Territory Management, Head of Group Dispute Resolution in Paris, Business Heads and the Group General Counsel, as appropriate.  To ensure relevant reporting into the Bank’s operational and legal reporting systems. Assistance to the Head of UK Litigation in respect of Territory and Legal Management reporting and preparation of supporting materials for this purpose.
  4. To draft appropriate policies and procedures and ensure these are put in place and maintained  to cover areas of identified legal risk both within the control functions and the businesses eg dawn raids, injunctions, bailiffs, documentation / data retention.
  5. To ensure the appropriate appointment and management of external legal advisers instructed to assist the London Litigation team. Effective management of external legal spend.
  6. To provide full legal support and services to all control functions within the London group and develop the relationship with colleagues in these functions 
  7. To support the Compliance Department in their management of the Bank’s relationship with home and host regulators and to the extent possible and as appropriate create and foster direct relationships with such regulators to ensure an effective, open and transparent dialogue with them on areas where they require assistance and input from the Litigation Team.
  8. To provide full litigation support to the other business metiers/poles operating out of the UK.
  9. To provide litigation support and services to other sites and offices within the international group requiring such support and assistance. Regular liaison and contact with counterparts in other litigation groups around the group to ensure effective mutual communication, sharing of knowledge, expertise and best practice together with consistency of approach.
  10. To maintain an effective and close relationship with GDR in Paris and with the other main GDR centres within the group, including in particular, NY, HK, Bahrain and Paris.
  11. To represent the UK Litigation group in Legal Practice Group meetings, calls, off sites etc and maintain close coordination and cooperation to ensure that the UK group’s views, comments, advice, position etc on all relevant issues are clearly put and communicated.
  12. To continue to raise the profile of the London Litigation team within the Bank.  Initiatives and proactivity in the team and moving it forward are expected.
  13. To keep up to date with relevant legal and regulatory developments.
  14. To review and undertake as required, specific training and development initiatives to address identified risk areas and/or general issues.  To prepare and circulate notes, memoranda, updates, legal analyses etc to support such initiatives.
  15. To develop an appropriate learning and development program in relation to litigation issues to assist in the continuing education of the Legal department and other functions and businesses.


Essential Skills / Competencies

  • Previous  experience in litigation, dispute resolution and regulatory investigations (preferably cross-border) in financial institutions, either in-house or in private practice.
  • Experience in financial crime advisory work an advantage.
  • An excellent oral and written communicator
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to develop an effective network of relationships both within the Bank and with external counsel.
  • Highly organised and able to undertake project management responsibilities
