VIE Leveraged Finance Analyst, CIB UK Credit & Portfolio Management Team  – Brussels, M/F

Your daily routine ?

Your role will be to assist the portfolio managers in all aspects of the day-to-day management of companies under LBO. This includes a.o. analysing their financial performance, spotting and assisting on new commercial opportunities, and reviewing options for the Bank when performance deteriorates.

The fact that these companies often operate under somewhat more risky financial structures, implies that credit analysis is more detailed and expects you to take into account macro-economic developments, sector analysis and modeling projections based on your own judgement.

In assisting the commercial relationship, you will be able to be in contact with the management of these companies, but also deal with internal counterparts, including coverage, other product specialists, Risk, Compliance & Legal departments, as well as middle and back offices.

On a daily basis, you will:

1. Actively monitor the financial performance and trends for each transaction for reporting to management and Risk ; Reporting frequency is quarterly across the portfolio, in addition to the more comprehensive annual reviews ;

2. Assist in handling ad hoc requests for waiver and/or amendments ;

3. Help prepare financial projections using the bank's standard financial model ;

4. Calculate internal ratings based on a range of qualitative criteria and up-to-date financial informatio n;

5. Assist in the on-boarding of new counterparties (KYC process) ;

6. Assist in internal reporting requirements.

The working environment is important !

Debt Markets EMEA is part of BNP Paribas' Investment Banking activity and has teams across Europe. Within Debt Markets, Leveraged Finance Capital Markets (LFCM) arranges, underwrites, structures and coordinates acquisition finance transactions for strategic corporate buyers and for private equity sponsors. The Credit & Portfolio Management (CPM) team works in close partnership alongside LFCM and is in charge of monitoring the portfolio of LBO exposure held by the bank.

You will be part of the wider European Credit & Portfolio Management (CPM) set-up, with hubs in Paris, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Brussels and London. You will be located within the Brussels team, but primarily work on the LBO portfolio of the UK, in close co-operation with the team that is based in London. However, when necessary, regional workflow might occasionally need to be managed across countries.

Both the Brussels and London CPM teams are small, each comprising 3 members, excluding the successful VIE candidate.  Although this facilitates close involvement in all activities, resources are limited while internal deadlines are strict.

The Brussels CPM team is based at the bank's main HQ in Brussels in the "Chancellerie" building, in the historical centre of Brussels. The offices are located opposite a big park, at a 5 minutes walk from the central station and only 300m away from 2 metro stops.

CPM is also part of the broader Leveraged Finance Capital Markets (LFCM) business within Debt Markets, which is co-located. This provides the opportunity for regular interaction with financial sponsor co-ordinators and deal originators.  The wider LFCM team in Brussels counts approximately 10 persons, originating mainly from Belgium, The Netherlands and France.

The next steps ?

The position constitutes a good apprenticeship in Leveraged Finance with one of the leading banks in the European Leveraged Finance market.

You will get a good sense of the European Debt markets and more specifically, get acquainted with the ins and outs of LBO financing.

You will be able to develop fundamental credit analysis and financial modelling skills, which should provide a good stepping stone for a career in investment banking.

The Debt Markets business in London and Brussels is sizeable and there will be opportunities to develop a working network and friendships with personnel of similar age and experience.

In other words, the role should put you in a good position to advance their career in a Leveraged Finance environment, either with BNP Paribas - if opportunities arise - or with another financial institution.
