Position Summary 

This role is a leadership position within the Corporate Compliance BSA/AML and Sanctions team at Bank of the West. This person will be responsible for being the SME to and driving numerous enterprise-wide projects related to sanctions and foreign correspondent banking.  They will also be responsible for developing and building an anti-bribery corruption program to meet FCPA requirements.  This person will provide BSA/AML/ and Sanctions compliance oversight of banking activities engaged in by various business lines or initiatives that may require compliance with foreign anti-money laundering / counter terrorism financing (AML/CTF) and/ or sanctions regulatory requirements.  


Position Accountabilities


  1. Drive numerous short and long-term projects affecting area as subject-matter expert

  2. Manage and drive resolution of remediation and strategic items for sanctions and foreign banking

  3. Develop an enterprise-wide anti-bribery and corruption program including program, risk assessment, policy and training; and develop and manage operational outcomes (vendor due diligence) as needed

  4. Ensure development, implementation, and maintenance of an effective OFAC/sanctions screening program across all business lines.

  5. Work with program area to develop and perform the annual Sanctions risk assessment.

  6. Identify risks and major compliance obligations (MCOs) related to OFAC / sanctions compliance and foreign banking compliance; assesses and advises on corresponding controls and control effectiveness.

  7. Ensure that the Bank’s businesses have implemented appropriate OFAC / sanctions screening tools in accordance with the Bank’s OFAC/sanctions policy, and maintains appropriate oversight of ongoing OFAC/sanctions screening throughout the Bank.

  8. Drive development of centralized processes and systems for OFAC/sanctions screening and compliance monitoring as appropriate.

  9. Assist in the development and/or enhancement of business line OFAC automated screening tools.

  10. Assist in the development of OFAC and sanctions testing protocols.

  11. Participates and is the SME when assessing new business line products and services 

Required Education or Equivalent Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required     

  • Master’s/Advanced Degree preferred     

  • Required license(s) or certification(s) ACAMS or ACFCS preferred

Required Experience

  • 6 to 8 years of directly related experience; 6 to 10 years of business analysis experience
  • 5 years of supervisory or managerial experience
  • Alternative:  Combination of education and experience (years /description) equivalent of 10 years related experience

Field of Experience

  • Minimum 10 years related bank compliance experience at major banking institution or regulatory agency

  • Strong subject matter knowledge of correspondent banking compliance requirements, foreign bank AML re-certification requirements, non-US anti-money laundering / counter terrorism financing regulatory requirements, and their practical application in a financial services environment

  • Strong knowledge of OFAC Sanctions, Anti-Boycott, and other prominent sanctions programs (eg. EU, UN), Bank Secrecy Act, USA PATRIOT Act, and FFIEC Examinations Manual

  • Strong knowledge of Anti-bribery and corruption regulation

  • Experience dealing with regulatory authorities at a high level

  • Knowledge of payment and sanctions screening systems 

  • People management experience and experience working across diverse business groups and teams

  • Exceptional communication skills (both written and oral); experience making presentations to senior level audiences

  • Strategic thinker and thought leader

  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment

  • Computer literacy required (Word, Excel, etc)
