Model Validation Manager

MISSION AND OBJECTIVES

Lead a model validation team responsible for the independent review of quantitative models used in both retail and wholesale banking operations, including those used for capital planning and asset/liability management, as well as the management of credit, market, liquidity and non-financial risks. Quantitative models support and underlie many of the most important processes and decision-making functions at CUSO (Combined US Operations). The model validation team works closely with model owners and developers along with other key stakeholders to manage model risk, and to ensure that all models are validated in accordance with CUSO's policies and regulatory guidance. Model validation is a key component of CUSO's model risk management program. This is a corporate-level Senior Manager role.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review of model data, theory, assumptions, implementation, outputs and performance, consistent with regulatory guidance and Bank policies. Interpret model validation test results and establish required action plans with model owners and developers to remediate findings. Provide value-added recommendations to model owners and developers.
  • Lead team members to complete assigned validation projections in accordance with CUSO's model validation standards, ensuring the thorough review of all model components and developmental evidence, and clear documentation of all validation findings. When required, oversee external validations.
  • Manage team resources in a dynamic multi-task environment. Employ technical expertise and analytic acumen to provide high quality deliverables in a fast paced risk management environment.
  • Build strong working relationships with key model stakeholders, including model developers, users and senior management, while providing effective challenge consistent with the team's role as a second line of defense. Tracking the resolution of findings with model owners and users.
  • Contribute to the development and promotion of effective model development, use and validation practices and standards within CUSO. Produce reports to track validation status and results for management and regulators.
  • Oversee the ongoing professional development of direct reports, which includes continuing coaching and feedback; encourage use of (internal/external) learning opportunities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


TRAINING AND OCCUPATIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Requires broad management and leadership knowledge to lead project teams multiple job areas.
  • Strong quantitative skills.  Experience leading teams in the financial services industry responsible for model development or validation.
  • Requires 12-15 years minimum prior relevant experience.

  • Possesses managerial interest and a leadership orientation.

SKILLS AND BEHAVIOURS

 
  • Experience with loss forecasting, stress testing, credit score cards, asset-liability management.
  • Strong quantitative skills in such areas as econometrics, statistics, applied mathematics.
  • Experience working with large data sets; SAS experience desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of bank products, processes and business practices.
  • Familiarity with leading model risk management practices and applicable regulatory guidance.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including effective presentation skills.
