Role Description and purpose

The role holder will serve to enhance and deepen the investment team's sources of information on Emerging Market country risk, working closely with the Emerging Market Fixed Income Portfolio Managers based in London to build and maintain country balance sheet models based on a data intensive template that generate creditworthiness signals to detect marginal changes in vulnerability, monitoring and anticipating investor flows into sovereign debt markets, and observing / analyzing effects of policy changes and policymaker decisions at the government level.  This role serves with emphasis on sovereign debt, feeding information to the Portfolio Managers in London to recommend and take risk in EM debt markets in BNPP AM portfolios, to contribute to overall global EM Fixed Income strategy generally, to contribute to continuing improvements in the investment process, to recommend optimal solutions for the implementation of investment decisions, to implement investment strategy and manage portfolios, to assist client servicing and marketing teams, to acquire and maintain knowledge of evolving trends in the global fixed income business.

key responsibilities

  • Research: The role holder will be responsible for sovereign credit research and monitoring sovereign risk in emerging market issuers, following and analyzing EM external debt through an economist’s lens in close collaboration with the Portfolio Managers based in London. 

  • Alpha Generation: The role holder will be responsible for helping drive the alpha generation of the team, generating ideas and contributing to team discussions and decision making.

  • Performance - EMD Investment Strategies:  The role holder will have direct influence on all EMD portfolios by contributing trade recommendations to the Portfolio Managers. 

  • Performance - Non-EMD Investment strategies:  The role holder will help inform country level decisions taken by other teams with EMD exposure and can speak knowledgeably and independently on related topics.

  • Investment Process: The role holder will be responsible for enhancing the sovereign credit investment process and will be expected to contribute to ongoing improvements and refinements to the investment process.

  • Investment Team: The role holder will be expected to contribute to the professional development of the other team members involved in EM country risk analysis.

  • Commercial success: The role holder will occasionally be called upon to meet with external parties and represent both the analytical function as well as the team process. 

  • Multiple locations: The successful candidate will need to build strong relationships and communicate effectively with geographically remote colleagues.

  • Key internal relationships: EMD Team Members especially the Heads of Team and the Portfolio Managers, other AM Teams, and AM team members around the world.

  • Key external relationships: BNPP AM Distribution/Institutional sales capabilities, IP/regional/local EM teams, Clients and prospects, Consultants.

  • Continuous Professional Development: to maintain current knowledge and understanding of developments in emerging market economics and balance of payments accounting. The position requires regularly attending seminars, conferences, training courses; reading professional publications, periodicals, research and other related literature; and through maintaining other professional and official contacts.

Business Knowledge/Commercial Acumen:

  • Able to learn depths of balance of payments accounting and build/maintain cross-sectional frameworks.

  • Able to analyse country risk indicators and distill large datasets into composite views.

Essential skills/competencies (TEchnical / behavioural / leadership)

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in Economics, Finance or related discipline. Strong Maths preparation an advantage.

  • Strong quantitative skills as evidenced by application in prior analytical roles.

  • Knowledge of Emerging Market sovereign risk, including a track record investing in currencies and/or bonds.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Emerging Markets.

  • Previous record in EM economics or EM bond analysis in a high-pressure, fast-paced setting.

  • Prior experience in a sovereign risk or economist role, preferably involving Balance of Payments accounting.

Specific other role requirements:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English language.

  • Fluency in Mandarin a plus.

  • Strong international orientation. Ability to work effectively with colleagues in remote locations.
