The role holder will be responsible for joint oversight, alongside the Head and Deputy Head of Emerging Market Fixed Income, of all aspects of EMD investment management, including, but not limited to, developing and implementing the investment process, alpha implementation, portfolio positioning, risk budgeting and performance.  The role holder will assist with daily monitoring of positions, idea generation, team-based discussion of investments, macroeconomic risk management, and decision implementation.  The person will be involved in all of the team’s portfolios, including Global EM hard currency, Global EM local currency, and Total Return/Absolute Return strategies.   The role holder will also be expected to make a key contribution to commercial efforts.


  • Interactions:  The role holder would be expected to attend (via VC or conference call) and contribute actively to each of the team’s four main discussion forums --Monday morning Strategies Meeting, Thursday Country Risk Meeting, Monthly Performance and Attribution Meeting, and Six-Weekly Macroeconomic Outlook Meeting.
  • Research: The role holder will be jointly responsible for analysing and following EMD investment strategies alongside the Heads of Team, and for co-directing the research efforts of the team by mentoring alpha generators and supplying them with trade ideas, observations on flows and technicals, and regulatory information relevant for trade idea generation. 
  • Idea Generation: The role holder will be jointly responsible for helping drive the alpha generation of the team, and for making a significant individual contribution to this process.
  • Execution and Portfolio Management:  The role holder will be involved in every step of the trade process, starting with trade order entry and timing of execution decisions under the tutelage of the Heads of Team and in collaboration with the alpha generators and portfolio construction team in London; vetting the new issuance pipeline, receiving roadshows and conducting analysis, recommending specific investments both at the security level and in the macro/industry dimensions; and ending in the allocation and decision making process for timing and implementation of trades.
  • Marketing:  The role holder will be an active component of asset raising and client facing for funds and mandates.
  • Commercial success: The role holder will be expected to maintain a profile within the asset management industry, attending and participating in industry events and seminars and interacting with the media, where appropriate. This role holder will make a key contribution to our commercial efforts, including client servicing/reporting as well as new business presentations to prospective clients and consultants on a global basis.
  • Multiple locations: The successful candidate will need to build strong relationships and communicate effectively with geographically remote colleagues on a global basis, including our local asset management teams around the world.
  • Key internal relationships: EMFI Team, Investment Specialists, Dealing Services HK, Head of Sales, and Sales/RMs around the world.
  • Key external relationships: Client Relationship Managers, Marketing (particularly product committees), Distribution/Institutional sales capabilities, clients and prospects, policy makers and regulators, consultants



  • Qualifications:
    • Degree in Economics, Finance or related discipline.  CFA a plus.
    • Knowledge of the full cross section of Emerging Market issuers and asset classes, including a track record of investing in currencies, rates and hard currency bonds.
    • Deep understanding of liquidity, investment flows, and asset price drivers in Emerging Market bonds, interest rates and FX derivatives.
    • Hands on exposure to the policy world in positions involving direct contact with emerging markets decision makers; strong client relationships externally helpful.
  • Experience:
    • Approximately 10 years’ experience in Emerging Markets fixed income investments.
    • Previous record directly managing global EMFI funds.
    • Proven thought leadership in EM and robust, logical investment philosophy.
    • In-depth knowledge and understanding of EM fixed income asset classes and instruments with a focus on  early stage markets with still uncertain regulatory environment.
  • Specific other role requirements:
    • Fluency in written and spoken English language.
    • Spoken and written fluency in Mandarin Chinese a plus.
    • Strong international orientation. Ability to work effectively with colleagues in remote locations.
    • Flexibility in working hours and ability to travel

    • In depth industry knowledge from both official sector and financial markets perspectives.
    • Able to anticipate market developments in the Asset Management industry on a global basis.
    • Strong relationships with policymakers and regulators in emerging markets.
